What insurance do I need as a small business?

Every business will have unique insurance needs, and our Alfa agents are ready to customize a quote for you. Common coverages needed for a small business are commercial property, commercial liability, workers’ compensation and commercial auto. Some coverages are often packaged together in a business owners policy, which is a convenient way to manage your commercial insurance.

Why is commercial insurance needed?

Businesses come with risk, and business insurance is needed to help cover the cost that comes with damages, whether that be damages to physical property, injuries to others or legal costs. Without commercial insurance, business owners would be paying for these damages out of pocket.

Business Insurance Coverages

Protecting your business is our business. Let’s tailor a commercial insurance policy that works for you.

Business Owners Policy

A BOP is a comprehensive package that includes the commercial insurance coverage most commonly requested by business owners. Customers also have the option to extend their policies to include specialized coverages ranging from professional liability to data breaches.

Ideal for small- and medium-sized businesses and combines property, business income and liability insurance into a single, convenient policy.

Property Coverage

Property coverage protects your building and its contents, and loss of income if you’re forced to close your business temporarily due to a covered loss. You can select optional coverage to protect your property in transit and cover someone else’s property while it is on your premises. There’s also optional coverage for plate glass, exterior signs or mobile communication equipment.

Example: A fire destroys your store front and your inventory is damaged from the smoke. Property coverage can pay for the repairs to your building and replacement of your contents, up to your policy limits.

Liability Coverage

Business liability can provide coverage for lawsuits by people who may be injured on your premises or at your job site. Medical coverage is included on all liability policies and will pay medical bills (up to $5,000) for visitors injured on your property, even if you aren’t sued or found to be negligent. Alfa®'s liability policies also cover property damage in case you damage someone else’s property. Coverage is also provided for personal injury and advertising injury, protecting you from lawsuits ranging from libel and slander to false arrest.

Example: You’ve just mopped the floor of your shop and a customer slips and falls. She is suing you to cover her medical costs. Your business liability can cover her medical payments and the costs associated with legal fees from the lawsuit.

Automobile Coverage

Commercial auto policies cover many types of vehicles used in your business, as well as protecting you from liability when using your own vehicle for business. Non-owned, borrowed or hired vehicles coverage is also available, and specialized policies also are available for businesses that regularly operate customers’ vehicles, such as a service station or body shop.

Example: Your delivery truck is involved in an accident causing injury to your employees and others. Commercial auto can cover the cost to repair your truck, medical bills for those injured and legal fees that may arise.

Inland Marine Coverage

While the name may be confusing, this coverage has nothing to do with oceans and everything to do with a business’s property when it’s transported off premises. Inland marine covers material, products or equipment that moves or is transportable, and/or is instrumental in transportation or communication.

Example: You’re in an accident on the way to cut a client’s yard. The expensive lawn equipment you were hauling on a trailer behind your work truck is damaged. Inland marine coverage can cover the repair or replacement of that equipment, up to the policy limits.

Commercial Umbrella

A commercial umbrella extends your liability limits beyond basic liability contracts for businesses which require large amounts of liability protection. In addition, we offer other types of protection for your business. Your dream can be further protected with a business umbrella policy.

Example: Your business suffers an extreme loss that exceeds your liability limits. A commercial umbrella policy then kicks in to cover the difference, up to the umbrella policy limits.

Workers’ Compensation

Workers’ compensation serves to protect your business, as well as your employees, by providing medical treatment and death benefits for employees. It can also protect your business from legal exposures. Alfa agents can write workers’ compensation policies through Alfa Agency, Inc. and its group of insurers.

Example: While on the clock, your employee suffers an injury. Workers’ compensation can help pay his medical bills and may provide coverage for any legal fees that may arise from the accident.
